Vacation

Vacation, by Rita Dove

I love the hour before takeoff, that stretch of no time, no home but the gray vinyl seats linked like unfolding paper dolls. Soon we shall be summoned to the gate, soon enough there’ll be the clumsy procedure of row numbers and perforated stubs–but for now I can look at these ragtag nuclear families with their cooing and bickering or the heeled bachelorette trying to ignore a baby’s wail and the baby’s exhausted mother waiting to be called up early while the athlete, one monstrous hand asleep on his duffel bag, listens, perched like a seal trained for the plunge. Even the lone executive who has wandered this far into summer with his lasered itinerary, briefcase knocking his knees–even he has worked for the pleasure of bearing no more than a scrap of himself into this hall. He’ll dine out, she’ll sleep late, they’ll let the sun burn them happy all morning–a little hope, a little whimsy before the loudspeaker blurts and we leap up to become Flight 828, now boarding Gate 17.

Greener MU Libraries

MU Libraries recently developed a task force to explore ways to make the libraries greener. The Greener MU Libraries Task Force is currently working on various projects to this end, which include increasing the number of recycling containers in the buildings, finding ways to reduce printing, and promoting the use of reusable containers at library events, among others.

As student employees of MU Libraries, we can help make our workplace greener as well by using the recycle bins in our lounges and break areas, reducing our printing and encouraging others to do so as well, and by generally being aware of our consumption and any wasteful habits.

If you have any suggestions on how MU Libraries could be made more environmentally friendly, please comment on this post. Your suggestions will be forwarded on to the Greener MU Libraries Task Force.

A July 4th American Tradition

Nathan’s International July Fourth Hot Dog Eating Contest–Coney Island, Brooklyn, NY

“According to legend, on July 4, 1916 four immigrants had a hot dog eating contest at Nathan’s Famous stand in Coney Island to settle an argument about who was the most patriotic. After twelve minutes, James Mullen had eaten thirteen hot dogs and was crowned the victor.

“The contest has been held nearly every year since in conjunction with Independence Day at the site. In 1993, a one-time, one-on-one contest under the Brooklyn Bridge was held between Mike DeVito and Orio Ito.

Story about Mr. DeVito, NYT 2007; NYT, 1998

“There is a weigh-in with the Mayor of New York City prior to the contest. On the day of the contest, the contestants arrive in the “bus of champions”.

“The winner is given possession of the coveted international “bejeweled” mustard-yellow belt. The belt is of “unknown age and value” according to IFOCE co-founder George Shea and rests in the country of its owner. Due to the string of Japanese wins in the first half of the 2000 decade, the belt had been on display in the Imperial Palace in Saitama, Japan near the Nakazato Danchi campus. It will be moved to the United States as a result of the 2007 contest win by American Joey Chestnut (http://www.ifoce.com/eaters.php?action=detail&sn=106).”

Columbia has it’s own Fourth of July tradition, which is now in it’s 57th year. Fire in the Sky is an event that takes place in Memorial Stadium at Mizzou.

This Friday, local bands and the Missouri Symphony will be performing on the field followed, of course, by a fireworks display beginning at 9:30.
