Welcome Back to the Libraries!

The end of summer, rest and relaxation is quickly approaching, which means we’ll soon be back to school and work at the libraries. Student Corner is also back to help keep you in touch with your fellow student library workers.

For those of you who are new to MU Libraries, this blog (Student Corner) is here to connect you and your student co-workers to what’s going on in the library community. Every week you will get an email with a link to the blog, which can include notices about library events, facts about the libraries, and posts featuring student workers.

Remember, Student Corner is for YOU! Feel free to comment or start a discussion. If you have any concerns or suggestions, please email Library Administration at umcellislibraryadmin@missouri.edu.

Enjoy!

The Mystery at the End of the Hall

After telling someone I work at Ellis Library, the person almost never fails to ask me if I push around a cart of books in the stacks or scan books for check out at the circulation desk. I don’t blame them though, how could they know about all the less visible student jobs at Ellis or any other library? Even I, having worked at MU Libraries for almost two years, couldn’t tell you what they do in Physical Processing.

Sitting here behind the reception desk in the administrative offices, I peek through the glass of door 104 and catch a slight glimpse of the circulation desk down the hall. To the left I see a security uniform on a student reporting for work at the north desk. While I do my work, transferring a phone call or writing a receipt for a locker, I wonder, “What are they doing down there?”

Actually, I’d like to know what you do also. Where do you work, what’s your day like, do any random interesting things happen to you at work? If you like to write, let me know (umcellislibraryadmin@missouri.edu) and we can post your story on Student Corner.

What genre of music would you most identify yourself with and why?  Classical because it’s relaxing; I’m a laid-back individual

Tell us something unique or unusual about yourself:  I am the only girl of 4 boys.  I have two sets of twin brothers; I’m stuck in the middle.

If you could get a second degree, what would it be and why?  Early Childhood; I love kids.

If you were stranded on a deserted island all alone, and you could only bring three things with you, what would they be?  I would take water (I love water), my cell phone (can’t live without it), and my laptop (so I can stay connected to the world).

Do you prefer cats or dogs and why?  Neither.  I’m kind of afraid of both, but if I had to choose one it would be cats because they’re easier to take care of.

If you could make up your own ice cream flavor, what would it be?  double chocolate cookies n’ cream

What current world/national issue are you most passionate about/interested in and why?  world hunger and poverty; I have a soft spot for the less fortunate, and I wish I could help them all

If you could get a second degree, what would it beEnglish/Creative Writing–I can’t get enough of writing

If you were stranded on a deserted island all alone and you could only have three things, what would they be?  a swimsuit, towel, and a satellite phone to call someone to come get me when I’m ready to leave

Do you prefer cats or dogs?  Dogs-hands down.  Cats creep me out and dogs are always excited to see you and are always full of energy.

If you could create your own ice cream flavor, what would it be?  My ice-cream flavor would be white chocolate raspberry because that sounds delicious.

What current world/national issue are you most passionate/interested in and why?  HIV and AIDS prevention and awareness.  I had the opportunity to travel to Tanzania where I saw first hand the devestation that this disease leaves behind.  HIV/AIDS is entirely preventable, entirely treatable, and in my opinion there is no reason why people are still allowing it to do so much harm.

Construction on the First Floor of Ellis Library

Have you been hearing drilling and hammering in the first floor of Ellis Library?  Or have you seen the big area closed off for construction and wondered what it is about?

Construction of a state-of-the-art Cisco TelePresence room is currently underway on the first floor of Ellis Library near the Administrative Offices. This room is part of the University of Missouri System’s new high-definition Cisco TelePresence system that will be linked to AT&T’s global network. The new TelePresence system will foster greater teaching and research collaboration while reducing travel time, travel-related expenses and carbon emissions.

Gary Forsee, University of Missouri System president, and his wife, Sherry, are providing the lead gift of $1 million for the new four-campus TelePresence system. The university’s strategic advanced technology partners, Cisco and AT&T, are contributing to the equipment, installation, maintenance, design, technical assistance and networking of the new Cisco TelePresence rooms.

Construction is expected to be completed by June 30, 2009. For more information, visit http://www.umsystem.edu/ums/news/releases/news08102801.shtml or contact Shannon Cary at carysn@missouri.edu.
