1.0 SCOPE OF POLICY

This policy defines the composition and functions of a University of Missouri-Columbia Libraries Staff Development Committee.

2.0 COMMITTEE CHARGE

2.1 The Committee will serve as an advisory committee to the Library Administration in all areas of staff development and continuing education for the University of Missouri-Columbia Libraries staff.

2.2 The Committee will plan and supervise the annual library staff awards ceremony.

2.3 The Committee will plan and supervise the orientation of new library staff to the MU Libraries.

2.4 Assisted by the Library Personnel Coordinator, the Committee will assess staff needs. To meet those needs it will plan and develop activities and training that will a) improve knowledge, skills, and attitudes for library staff, b) improve library staff's potential for promotion to another library or University position, and c) foster personal and long range development.

3.0 COMPOSITION

The Staff Development Committee will consist of two librarians, not from the same division, two members of the support staff, not from the same division, and the Library Administrative Associate (ex officio).

4.0 METHOD OF APPOINTMENT

4.1 The committee will be a standing committee.

4.2 The Director of Libraries will call for volunteers to serve on the Committee in the spring of each year.

4.3 Appointments will be staggered to assure continuity.

4.4 The Chairperson of the Committee will be appointed annually by the Director of Libraries.

5.0 TERMS OF APPOINTMENT

5.1 Appointments will be made for two-year terms.

5.2 Terms of service will be staggered with one librarian and one support staff member replaced one year, and the remaining librarian and support staff member replaced the following year.

5.3 Appointments will be effective June 1 of each year to allow time to plan fall activities.

6.0 VACANCIES

6.1 Vacancies on the committee will be filled by the Director of Libraries upon recommendation of the Chair of the Committee.

6.2 The vacancy must be filled at the staff category in which the vacancy occurs.
