Abattoir Editions is the laboratory and publishing press of the University of Nebraska in Omaha. It was established in 1972. Gregg Anderson and Ward Ritchie met in the late 1920s. Their shared interest in printing and typography led to Anderson's joining the Ward Ritchie Press around 1935. In 1940, the decision was made to make Anderson & Ritchie a separate company from the Ward Ritchie Press. From then on, Anderson & Ritchie was responsible for the printing and commercial publishing aspect of the business, while the Ward Ritchie Press concentrated on publishing and designing literary works. Anderson has been described as a talented printer and businessman, and the company grew and became profitable under his administration. Anderson was drafted into the Army in 1942 and was killed in action in 1944. Click here for a list of materials available at MU Libraries.

Joe Simon was hired as a press assistant at Anderson & Ritchie in 1937, and he helped to hold the company together during World War II after the departures of Gregg Anderson and Ward Ritchie for the war effort. Simon was trained in printing by his sister and brother-in-law, Saul and Lillian Marks, at the Plantin Press in Los Angeles. After the death of Gregg Anderson, his widow, Caroline Bennett Anderson, sold her share in the business to Simon, and the firm was renamed Anderson, Ritchie & Simon. The Ward Ritchie Press name was retained for occasional limited edition work designed by Ward Ritchie.

Valenti Angelo was a well known artist, printer and book illustrator. He worked with several private presses to create illustrated limited edition books, and he also authored and illustrated a number of children's books.

Anson Jones Press was founded in 1929 in Houston, Texas, by Herbert Herrick Fletcher, a librarian and bookseller. The press was established when Fletcher and his wife Thelma Rawls Fletcher were offered 585 surplus copies of Anson Jones's Memoranda and Official Correspondence Relating to the Republic of Texas left over from the original printing in 1860. Profits from the sale of the books financed the beginning of the press, which emphasized Texas history and authors.

Fred Anthoensen was hired as a compositor at the Southworth Press of Portland, Maine, in 1901, was promoted to managing director in 1917, and was a partner in the firm of Southworth-Anthoensen by 1934. The Anvil Press was established in 1952 by Joseph Graves, Carolyn Reading, and others, to express appreciation for the ideals and teaching of Victor Hammer. Victor Hammer was a successful printer and artist who spent his early career in Europe. In 1939 he moved to the United States, where he taught at Wells College in Aurora, New York. He established two private presses, Wells College Press and Hammer Press. The Anvil Press is located at Transylvania College in Lexington, Kentucky. The Auerhahn Press was begun in 1958 by Dave Haselwood in San Francisco, California. Andrew Hoyem became a partner in the press in the early 1960s. The press did job printing and ephemera in order to finance the publication of modernist poetry, particularly that of the Beat poets. Auerhahn Press continued until January, 1965. Peter Beilenson was a printer active in New York, beginning in Larchmont, and later moving to Mount Vernon, New York. He founded the Peter Pauper Press and the Walpole Printing Office (with Edmund B. Thompson), and also pubished a few more risqué volumes under the name At the Sign of the Blue-Behinded Ape. Black Sun Press was originally begun in 1927 as Éditions Narcisse by Harry and Caresse Crosby in Paris, France. The name was changed to Black Sun Press in mid-1928. After Harry's death in 1929, the press broadened its scope and printing continued until 1951, although the press did not offically close until Careese' death in 1970.

Bodley Head was begun in 1887 by John Lane and Elkin Mathews in London. In 1937, a group of publishers bought Bodley Head. The company was sold again after World War II. Click here for a list of titles available at MU Libraries.
Publishers Horace Liveright and Albert Boni founded Boni & Liveright in 1916 in order to bring modern literature to the American public. The company was noted for printing controversial writings by authors often considered radical and even immoral by contemporary anti-vice societies. Dr. Terry Belanger began the Book Arts Press at Columbia University in New York in 1972. The press served as a laboratory of the rare book program of the Columbia University School of Library Service. The press transferred to the University of Virginia, Charlottesville when Dr. Belanger became a professor there in 1992. It was renamed the Rare Book School in 2000. The Book Club of Texas was established in 1929 by Stanley Marcus and is dedicated to publishing books "designed and produced by notable printers who work with texts of lasting historical and literary merit" (website). Bremer Presse was established in 1911 by Ludwig Wolde and Willi Wiegand, with others. It was located in the German city of Bremen from 1911-1918 and moved to Toelz in 1918. In 1939 the press moved to Munich, where it was destroyed in the bombings of 1944. Wolde and Wiegand modeled their press after the English Doves Press, whose economical use of decoration and clean typefaces proved influential in the development of modern book design. Brindabella Press is located in Deakon, Canberra, Australia. It was founded in 1972 by Alexander Thorley Bolton, and has continued after his death in 1996. It is now owned by the Brindabella Group. From 1985 to 1992, Officina Brindabella was the name used for the press.

Sam and Sally Green began printing poetry chapbooks in their Seattle home in 1978, but moved to a small island off the coast of Washington in 1982. There they operate a small farm and have built their own house and studio, all without electricity or running water. The Brooding Heron Press was named after their emphasis on the nurturing and creative process instead of the final product.
The Greens print about 3 titles per year on a C&P platen press and focus on works of poetry. Their work has been recognized with several awards and reviews.
