This table provides a list of some historic newspapers that are available online through Ellis Library subscriptions or at no cost to the general public.

More historic newspapers are available online in the following databases:

  • 19th Century Masterfile is designed to help you begin your historical research using the truly authoritative subject, author and title indexes published prior to 1925. It is an index to periodical articles appearing in British and American scholarly journals from 1802 to 1906. Indexing is by keyword only. For a listing of titles indexed, click here.
  • Academic Search Premier provides full text for nearly 4,600 scholarly publications, including more than 3,500 peer-reviewed publications. In addition to the full text, this database offers indexing and abstracts for all 8,052 journals in the collection. To search for newspapers only, select "Newspaper" under publication type.
  • Alternative Press Index indexes over 250 alternative, radical and left periodicals, newspapers and magazines. Coverage is international and interdisciplinary, from 1991-present. Some full-text is available. Searching may be limited to items held in Ellis Library.
  • C19 - Nineteenth Century Index draws on the strength of established indexes such as the Nineteenth Century Short Title Catalogue, The Wellesley Index and Periodicals Index Online to create integrated bibliographic coverage of over 1.3 million books and official publications, 61,647 archival collections and 15.5 million articles published in over 2,500 journals, magazines and newspapers. Full-text is not available.
  • Chronicling America, Early American Newspapers (Currently covering selected newspapers from Florida, Kentucky, New York, Utah, Virginia, and Washington D.C. 1900-1910 available now, with plans to expand dates from 1836-1922).
  • Columbia Missourian online edition provides full-text access to articles published in the Missourian from 2002-present.
  • Factiva provides access to current issues and an archive of over 8,000 publications from around the globe. Search for newspapers by selecting "Source", then "Newspapers: All". This may also be broken down by continent, region, or country, then selecting a specific newspaper. Full-text available.
  • Historic Missouri Newspaper Project provides searchable full-images of 14 Missouri newspapers. Coverage dates vary.
  • Lexis-Nexis Academic Universe offers access to the fulltext of current and back issues of major newspapers, journals, newsletters, and news sources from around the world. This source is full-text. Use "Quick News Search" for any newspaper articles about a topic, or the "Guided News Search" for articles in a specific newspaper.
  • NewsBank, a searchable full-text database, indexes the St. Louis Post-Dispatch from 1989, the Kansas City Star from 1991, and other selected newspapers from Missouri and around the nation.
  • Newspaper Source provides selected full text for nearly 30 national (U.S.) and international newspapers. The database also contains full text television & radio news transcripts, and selected full text for more than 200 regional (U.S.) newspapers. Browse a listing of indexed titles by clicking "Publications" under basic search.
  • Paper of Record is a free Internet site (registration required) providing searchable full text versions of hundreds of historical newspapers from around the world.
  • ProQuest Historical Newspapers digitally reproduces every issue of the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal from cover-to-cover. There is a short gap between this database's coverage and the most current issues. Coverage during this gap can be found in Lexis-Nexis Academic Universe. It provides full page-image and full-text searching of these newspapers. To limit results by date, see these instructions.
  • Regional Business News provides comprehensive full-text coverage for regional business publications. It incorporates coverage of 75 business journals, newspapers and newswires from all metropolitan and rural areas within the United States.
