Recall Books that are Checked out

The Library reserves the right to recall all books after two weeks of use if requested by another MU borrower. Materials needed for reserve may be recalled at any time. Students, staff, faculty, and courtesy borrowers are charged fines for overdue recalled books at the rate of $2.00 per day. Please return recalled items by the new due date on the notice that is sent to you to avoid fines.

If you want to recall a book that is checked out to another borrower, please do the following:

  1. Come to the Circulation Desk, which is located on the north side of the first floor of Ellis Library or at any branch library circulation desk with your MU ID card.
  2. Have the author, title and call number of the item that you would like recalled ready to give to the person working at the Circulation Desk.
  3. We can recall an item that you need from another borrower if there are no other copies available in any other MERLIN/MOBIUS Library.
  4. Each borrower is guaranteed two weeks to use an item before they must return it. Recalling a book that you need generally results in your getting it quicker than waiting for the person to finish with it and return it.
  5. Requests for recall cannot be made by telephone.
  6. Requests for recall cannot be made by email.
  7. You cannot recall an item online through the MERLIN or MOBIUS catalog. You can place a hold on an item in those catalogs but the hold will only alert the Circulation staff that you want the book after the other person has finished with it.
  8. If there is an available copy at any other MERLIN/MOBIUS library, that copy will be requested rather than recalling one that is already checked out to a patron.
