Find Maps

Find Maps in MERLIN

  • Use the Advanced Search.

    • In the Limit To area, choose Print Map as a Material Type
    • Enter the location in the search box (state, city and state, park, river, etc.) Examples are "Denali national park,"  "Boone County Missouri,"  or "Cape Canaveral."
  • Use the Basic Keyword search by adding the term "map" to any location or keyword (eg. "map Spain" or "poverty map")
    • If the item is a map, the map icon will be shown on the right of each row.
    • A book is indicated with a book icon. Some books may contain also maps of interest. Click on each item to view details; the Description line will indicate if the book has a map.

Federal Government Maps

  • There is a wide variety of government maps available:
    • Political maps from the Executive Office of the President and the CIA
    • Demographic maps from the Census Bureau
    • Topographical maps from the USGS
    • Land use maps from the Dept of the Interior
    • Nautical charts from the NOAA
    • Historic military battle maps from the Dept of War
    • Historic maps showing railroads, rivers, roads, etc.
    • Maps of federal lands, parks, etc. from the USDA
  • Where  to find government maps that are cataloged in MERLIN and which show a location in Ellis Library.
    • If MERLIN indicates MU ELLIS DOCS MAP as the location, it will be in one of two places.
      • If the map was shipped to us folded, it will be shelved upright on shelves outside the Docs office.
      • If it was shipped to us rolled, then the map will be stored flat in a map cabinet located just outside the Docs office.
      • There is no way for anyone to know whether the map was shipped to us folded or rolled, so you essentially have to check both places.
      • Click on the location link in MERLIN, to get a very detailed page with photographs showing the map shelves, a floor map with map shelves clearly marked.
    • If MERLIN indicates MU ELLIS DOCS, the map is shelved with the regular government documents in 1 East.

Topographical maps are housed in the Geological Sciences Library.

  • Perry-Castañeda Library Map Collection
    Excellent collection of online maps of general interest ordered geographically. Maps FAQ includes directions for re-sizing and printing the maps. Go to Other Map Sites for other historical, country, state, city, and weather map Web sites. From the Univerity of Texas Perry-Castañeda Collection Map Library. About 5,000 of their collection of 250,000 maps are online.
  • GODORT Maps and Geography listing
    Contains links to maps from various federal agencies, such as the Department of the Interior, Library of Congress, Department of Defense and the Department of Agriculture.
  • Librarian's Internet Index - Maps
    Links to a variety of map information, including historical maps, those with economic, social and scientific themes, collections and travel. A search on "maps" will bring up hundreds of other resources. Each link is fully described and chosen by librarians.
