Cinema is relocating on new devices and in new environments: in its migration, it asks us to change our habits and our attitudes. Are we still spectators - or are we users, surfers, nostalgic buffs, technology experts, hackers and face-book friends? This book provides a deep insight in such a controversial situation, both at the theoretical and empirical level - retracing a history and facing a destiny. Francesco Casetti, Yale University This excellent book grows out of two networks of cinema and media scholars: members of the Netherlands-France-United Kingdom project that inspired the series of studies called The Key Debates and Dormitor, the international organisation promoting research on early cinema. It ties together studies of European and American cinema-going with Ranita Chatterjee's pioneering research into audiences in Calcutta, India. A particular strength of the book is its chronological reach, stretching from Nicholas Hiley's work on early British film audiences, Judith Thissen's revisiting of the famous 'who went to the nickelodeons' debate and Gregory Waller's analysis of 'non-theatrical' American audiences in the mid-1910s to the explorations of new platforms for film in the digital age by Laurent Jullier/Jean-Marc Leveratto and Roger Odin. In the early days of film, as editor Ian Christie points out in an excellent introduction, there was a variety of 'screen entertainment' before the feature film came to dominate the market. In recent years, as cinemas become increasingly digitised, that variety of entertainment is beginning to reappear, as audiences go to watch live opera, theatre and other forms of entertainment. The book illustrates very well the range of approaches to researching cinema-going that have emerged during the 'audience turn' of the last fifteen years. There are chapters on the 'imagined audience' by Frank Kessler (looking at how the manner in which Melies constructed his audiences influenced his film-making); on the economic and statistical audience (John Sedgwick/Clara Pafort-Overduin analysing audiences in London and Amsterdam in the mid-1930s) and the individual spectator (Torben Grodal on the psychological sources of the impact of certain films on viewers). Ranging broadly in chronological terms, and genuinely interdisciplinary in the approach of contributors, Christie's book is a thoughtful and worthy addition to the growing field of studies of screen audiences.
