Ainslie documents how a perfect storm of marauding drug cartels, corrupt police forces, and unprepared city officials left citizens helpless and terrorized in what became the world’s most murderous city. Significantly, he hammers the prepotent truth that organized crime could not and would not have run amok in Mexico were it not for the collusion of the mobsters’ trusted acolytes—the police, at every level. A remarkable achievement, this book brings clarity to our world of misinformation that animates American culture. More than a reference, this work serves as a guide, a warning of sorts, revealing how simple it can be to fool the world." -- Joseph Garerra, Executive Director, Lehigh Valley Heritage Museum" --

""The study of archaeological hoaxes and historical frauds is a long and intriguing one, with many books, articles and academic papers having been written over the years, but Edward Steers Jr.'s masterful study of six of the best (and most famous) covers new ground in its breadth and scope. Steers takes the reader on a fascinating journey through the mind and modus operandi of the forger, detailing the many twists and turns of each fabrication, considering why they were considered necessary and what each was attempting to achieve. It is an enthralling exploration of the darker side of academic life and of the psychology of the forger. By spotlighting the dynamic interplay between terrorist movements and the modern state, its security apparatuses and 'wars on terrorism', Miller compels readers to rethink the origins, nature, and scope of terrorism in its broadest sense. This important book demonstrates the fundamental significance of history to contemporary debates about terrorism and state violence." -Susan Morrissey, University College London

"The Foundation of Modern Terrorism is an unusual, well-written and fascinating study of the relationship between rebel and state terror from the French Revolution to the end of the 20th century. Facilitative leadership is a form of leadership in which the leader directs a group but does not dictate the outcome of the group discussion. This form of leadership is essential for, and uniquely suited to, social workers whose entire profession is based on helping clients determine their own goals and how to achieve them.

The book describes, step-by-step, the skills needed to successfully perform formal and informal leadership roles in group, agency, and community settings. All aspects of the facilitative process are addressed, including the phases of group development, how to organize a meeting, when and how to intervene, and how to know if facilitative leadership is working. The book explains how facilitative leadership relates to the social work code of ethics, and discusses the ground rules for effective communication. A number of leadership theories that inform facilitative leadership are examined. The text also includes skill building and critical reflection exercises in each section along with case studies to enhance learning.
Key Features:

Describes the concept, principles, and characteristics of facilitative leadership and how they relate to the social work code of ethics
Clarifies the facilitative leader?s role and distinguishes it from that of trainer, consultant, or chairperson
Identifies the phases of group development and their significance
Instills competence and ease in the use of group process techniques
Promotes facilitative leadership skills in formal and informal situations</ul</p>"

Call #: HV40.35 .B76 2013

Lone wolf terrorism : understanding the growing threat / Jeffrey D. This is hard-boiled history from the front lines of America's longest and cruelest war. -- Jeffrey St. Clair, editor of CounterPunch, co-author of Whiteout: the CIA, Drugs and the Press (1998) Mercille's meticulous research and writing are an indispensable part of the story of this war - his book exposes an issue that has been undercovered for far too long. -- Sonali Kolhatkar, author of Bleeding Afghanistan: Washington, Warlords, and the Propaganda of Silence Cruel Harvest is an excellent addition to the library of anyone interested in comprehending the intertwined world of great power foreign policy, regional and civil wars, and the world-wide narcotics trade. Mercille gives the reader a well-balanced and nuanced understanding of the reality of the Afghan and Central Asian drug trade. Cruel Harvest should be required reading in Washington DC. -- Matthew Hoh, Senior Fellow, Center for International Policy, Washington DC Mercille provides a useful exposition of the counter-narcotic rationale for the West's continued war in Afghanistan and its wider relationship to American primacy. -- Doug Stokes, author of America's Other War: Terrorizing Colombia (2005) Exposing the faces of Jehadi fundamentalists is very important so the world is aware that the US ... continues to keep them in power. Mercille's book breaks this taboo. -- Malalai Joya, former member of Afghanistan's parliament Cutting edge: a much needed update to an issue critical to numerous disciplines, interests and growing social concerns and provides the reader/researcher with valuable tools. -- Elizabeth Gould and Paul Fitzgerald, authors of Invisible History: Afghanistan's Untold Story (2009)

Call #: HV5840.A3 M47 2013

Disrupting the school-to-prison pipeline / edited by Sofía Bahena ...
