Please RSVP for Next Week’s Mark Twain Events Including Free John Davis Concert

November 6, 2009 – 2:18 pm

Next year marks the 100th anniversary of the death of Mark Twain, one of Missouri’s favorite sons. In honor of this anniversary, the University of Missouri has several events planned for the academic year, including a concert at the Missouri Theatre sponsored by the MU Libraries. On Nov. 12, 2009, at 7 p.m. John Davis will perform 19th century piano music, including music by Thomas “Blind Tom” Wiggins and John William “Blind” Boone. RSVP for this FREE event by contacting Shannon Cary at carysn@missouri.edu or 573-882-4703.

Because Mark Twain loved good stories and good food, the University Club will host a special buffet before the concert featuring his favorite foods. The University Club will open its buffet at 4:30 p.m. on Nov. 12 at a price of $18.95 per person. Please call 573-882-2586 to make reservations.

At 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 13, 2009, the Friends of the Libraries will host “The Unknown Twain: An Evening of Readings” at the Conley House on the MU campus. Readers will include the Poet Laureate of Missouri; Walter Bargen, former MU Chancellor Dr. Richard Wallace; and broadcaster and historian Bob Priddy. Please contact Sheila Voss at vosss@missouri.edu or 573-882-4701 for more information.

Summon Update

November 6, 2009 – 12:52 pm

The new unified search tool, Summon, that MU Libraries recently purchased with technology fee funds, is scheduled to be available for staff late in November or early December. Work continues on loading information, including bib records, the MOspace OAI search information, database linking information and other technical aspects. Many staff are involved, and the work is being coordinated by the Summon Team of Felicity Dykas, Rhonda Whithaus, Diane Johnson, Karen Darling, Matt Stevens, Cindy Bassett and Ann Riley with help from Judy Maseles and Wayne Sanders. UMKC and Missouri S & T are also implementing, and UMKC has a preliminary instance available at http://umkc.summon.serialssolutions.com/ for those who would like to take a look and see a preview. As soon as the MU instance is available, possibly in a few weeks, the Summon Team will send out the MU link and schedule a forum for all to learn more. The preliminary plans call for the Summon search box, for which the Web Usability group has conducted research on an appropriate name, to be on the Libraries’ gateway page.

Letter From Asian Affairs Center

November 5, 2009 – 3:59 pm

Dear Friends of the Asian Affairs Center:

We are happy to report that we have our largest groups of teachers, scholars, college and middle school students visiting our campus from Korea, China, and Mongolia this winter. Because we try to ensure that everyone visiting the University of Missouri campus has the opportunity to visit an American home, we have a request. Would you be able to host a couple of visiting scholars to dinner in your home some evening during January? Do you know anyone who might be interested in doing this?

A winter English and leadership experience is being planned for sixth graders from Jellanamdo, Missouri’s sister province in South Korea. It also includes Columbia’s sister city, Suncheon City. Although primarily funded by the province to help the children from this rural area be more nationally competitive, the children have all been selected because of their English ability and their parents’ support for this experience. They have requested a brief home-stay in an American home. We would like to schedule these during the weekend of January 15th to the 19th. They would return to the family home after attending school that Monday for a final night.

If you can help with either of these experiences, would you please contact my colleague at the Asian Affairs Center, Mary Jo Herde by email (herdem@missouri.edu) or phone (882-5624). She will also be happy to provide more information about each of these.

A couple of other things that may be of interest to those interested in Pacific Rim culture and activities include:

• “China’s 30 Years of ‘Opening Up and Reform’- Continuities and Change”
November 17 at 7 p.m. in the Memorial Union N- 103 (Stotler III)
Visiting scholar - Professor Lingling Qi - will share her thoughts on China. There is no cost for this excellent program sponsored by the Columbia Friends of China and the Asian Affairs Center.

The Asian Affairs website (http://asia.missouri.edu) has added opportunities for work and study in Korea and China. Several of these are connected to partner institutions of the University of Missouri and should provide a good international experience for teachers, language students, and scholars.

Sincerely,

Sang S. Kim
