LibX browser extension for MU Libraries

What is LibX?

  • LibX MU Libraries is a Firefox/IE extension that provides direct access to MU Libraries resources from whatever web page you are on. Note: LibX was written for Firefox and works best in Firefox.

Here are some of the things you can do with MU Libraries LibX toolbar:

Right-Click Menu: Highlight names, terms or citations on a web page, right click, and on the menu that appears you can choose to search MU Libraries resources, FindIt@MU, Academic Search Premier, Google Scholar, WorldCat.

Embedded Cues (links): Look for when you are at Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Google Books, the New York Times Book Review, and many other sites. Click on it to search the MERLIN catalog for the book being referenced, and find out whether MU Libraries have the book before you buy it.
    • Toolbar: Use the toolbar to search the MERLIN catalog, e-journals, articles, Google Scholar, or the world's libraries directly from your browser window.
  • LibX Right click menu
Support for off-campus access via EZProxy: Using the MU Libraries' off-campus proxy, you may reload a page through the proxy, or follow a link via the proxy, making it appear as though you are coming from an on-campus computer. Simply right-click on any page to see this option. Note that not all library subscriptions work with this service, and you may need to use the MU Libraries VPN for some of them - see the Remote Access page for more information.

Support for Google Scholar: Select text and right-click to search for the selected text on Google Scholar. In addition, LibX will direct you to an electronic copy owned by the MU Libraries via should you not have access to the copy to which Google Scholar links. You can use this feature even from inside a PDF on a Windows PC, which makes retrieving papers referenced in a PDF file a snap.

          Installation

          Firefox

The Firefox version of LibX works with Firefox versions 1.5.x, 2.x, or 3.x on Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux.

Firefox may display a message that reads "To protect your computer, Firefox prevented this site from installing software on your computer." Since some browser plugins could potentially be malicious, Firefox prompts with this warning when you attempt to install a new add-ons to it. The open source LibX add-on was developed by Virginia Tech and is in use by many universities around the world, and we believe it not to pose any security or privacy risks. If you wish to use the LibX add-on, you will need to tell Firefox that you trust the source of the program, and to allow it to be installed.

To continue the installation after seeing this warning, press the button labelled "Edit Options..." that has appeared near the top of your browser window and click "Allow" to add http://mulibraries.missouri.edu or libx.org to the list of websites from which extensions may be installed. Then click "OK" and visit the above "Install" link again. After the installation is completed, you will need to restart your browser for the add-on to take effect.

          Internet Explorer

While the Firefox version of LibX has been available for some time and is very well tested and stable, the Internet Explorer version is relatively new, and is still considered to be beta software. If you choose to install it, be aware that some of the functions may not work, and that it may cause other problems with your browser.

Save the file. Close all Internet Explorer windows and run the file. A wizard will walk you through the installation process. Check the box to re-start Internet Explorer before you click "finish". LibX IE requires that .Net 2.0 or later is installed. You may need to check your Windows Update.

If Internet Explorer attempts to temporarily block your installation of LibX, click the Information bar and follow the prompts to continue. Once the "File Download - Security Warning" dialog box appears, click Open or Run to begin installing LibX.

LibX is an Internet Explorer add-on, or ActiveX control. Install LibX only if you are comfortable installing ActiveX controls. You might not be able to install LibX if your system administrator has disabled your ability to install ActiveX controls, if you do not have administrative privileges, or if you are using a standard user account.

To uninstall LibX, use the Windows Control Panel and follow the same steps you would take to uninstall a Windows program. Look for "LibX for IE" in your list of installed programs.

By using this extension your browser may send the URL of pages you are currently visiting to MERLIN catalog server. Such information is sent only if you are actively using the extension; it is never sent automatically. If you wish to avoid this you must turn off the referrer URL by setting network.http.sendRefererHeader to 0 in your Firefox preferences (note that this may cause some web sites that require referer information to not work correctly).

      • You can customize or disable many of these features in the LibX Preferences window, and can hide the LibX toolbar altogether when you don't need it.

    • The left side of the toolbar also has quick links to the Libraries' Gateway page, Contacts, Hours, Ask a Librarian links and LibX preferences.

  • Autolinking Feature: LibX links any numbers perceived as ISSNs or ISBNs, but sometimes, it will add links to other numbers on a web page like 9-digit zip codes. To turn off this "autolink pages" feature, open the "Libx MU Libraries " menu in the Firefox toolbar, uncheck "autolink pages," and reload the page. The autolinking will stay off and no longer link any numbers, but you'll still be able to use the rest of the features of LibX.
