UM Libraries Depository Module 2 (U2)

U2 is the second module of the UM Libraries Depository, located in the Underground Records Management storage center which is a part of the Subterra properties. The facility is 100 feet underground in a Burlington Limestone cavern that is naturally temperature and humidity controlled 24/7. The temperature is 60 degrees and the humidity is 60%, with small variances.

U2 utilizes 1,000 square feet of office and processing space, as well as 27,000 square feet of storage space. 108-inch Wilson library shelving is used to store materials. U2 shelves items to be stored in trays, by size, to maximize the use of space, similar to the Harvard high-density shelving model of UMLD. We anticipate being able to shelve between 1.2 and 1.3 million volumes (depending upon size of items sent to us for shelving) in this location. We anticipate that this space will accommodate the storage needs of the UM Libraries for 10-14 years, depending upon the rate of items being sent for deposit.

Due to the busy schedule at U2, tours of the facility must be approved, and are by appointment only. For more information about UMLD please contact June DeWeese, Head of Access Services, Ellis Library, or James Keyzer-Andre, UMLD Manager.
