The library stacks are open to all users. Patrons are encouraged to locate and retrieve their own books, and to browse if they wish.
Reference books (bibliographies, encyclopedias, handbooks, dictionaries, etc.) and indexes and abstracts are shelved in Library of Congress call number order in two counter-high book cases. These materials do not circulate.
All home-use books and periodicals are shelved according to the Library of Congress (LC) classification system in the library stacks. All books and journals classified according to the Dewey are shelved in the Library Annex. The LC classification system files according to letters while the Dewey classification scheme begins with numbers. Current (unbound) journals are shelved alphabetically by title along the left wall of the main room in the library.
The new book bookcase is located directly across from the Circulation Desk. New books are placed there weekly and stay for the rest of the month. They may be checked out at any time. A list of all new books received in the library is also posted online monthly.
The microfiche/microfilm cabinet is located by the Library Catalog. One microfiche reader is available for use. Patrons may ask at the circulation desk if they need assistance. Patrons who wish to view microfilm must check it out and take it to the Special Collections area on the fourth floor of Ellis Library. The Engineering Library received the SAE Technical Papers on microfiche through 1989. Paper copies of microforms may be made at the Copy Service, first floor of Ellis Library.
