Ebook Series Cataloged

October 23rd, 2009

The Digital Resources Unit recently completed two large ebook series and one collection this month. They are:

ACS Symposium Series: This series consisted of over 1,000 titles published by the American Chemical Society in the last 30 years, covering a variety of topics in chemistry.

Advances in Chemistry Series: Over 250 titles published from the 1950’s, also by the American Chemical Society.

University of Pittsburgh Press Digital Editions: nearly 500 titles which the University of Pittsburgh has chosen to make open access, including many out of print titles.

Thanks to Anna Jensen and Rebecca Schedler for their hard work in cataloging these ebooks.

As a reminder, you can now limit just to ebooks by selecting the Material Type of Ebooks through limiting or advanced searching.

Special Studies series (MU in cooperation with Lexis-Nexis & OCLC Collection Sets)

September 21st, 2009

We have completed cataloging for the microfilm set “Latin America, 1982-1985 Supplement” and the film is now available in Special Collections.  It is part of the larger Special Studies series  by University Publications of America (now part of Lexis-Nexis).

The Catalog Dept has an agreement with Lexis-Nexis to catalog these microfilm sets for OCLC Collection Sets in exchange for receiving the microfilm sets for FREE!  A list of completed sets is available from OCLC Collection Sets at:  http://collectionsets.oclc.org/SetInfo.jsp?SetSymbol=YMV

This is another way we are using our resources to maximize our acquisitions.  The set we just finished cataloging has a cost of $660.  Lexis-Nexis will be sending us the next installment, Latin America, 1985-1988 Supplement which costs $2,740.

“Special Studies provide assessments by U.S. experts on far-ranging topics of national, regional, and global concern. Students and researchers worldwide who are interested in international relations will find much authoritative material to further their understanding and stimulate their own thinking.

The authors of these special studies are associated with several of the finest research facilities in the United States: the Army War College’s Strategic Studies Institute, the Naval War College’s Center for Advanced Research, the National Defense University, the Institute for Defense Analysis, the Army Command and General Staff College, the American Institutes for Research, and major international institutes at Harvard, Columbia, Stanford, Georgetown, MIT, and Yale.”–Publisher’s website, Sept. 21, 2009.

You may locate these in MERLIN by using the exact titles:

Enhancing MERLIN Records with Table of Contents, Etc.

August 25th, 2009

We now have a subscription to OCLC’s Bibliographic Notification Service (http://www.oclc.org/bibnote/default.htm). With this service, we receive reports from OCLC about changes others have made to bibliographic records in WorldCat.

We are using this information to quickly enhance records in MERLIN with table of contents, summaries, and subject headings. In June, we added table of contents to 411 records and new subject headings to 250 records. 304 additional records already had table of contents, many supplied via our table of contents subscription.

Examples of enhanced records:

MU Maps “Learning Environment” Project Meeting

July 28th, 2009

Marie Concannon invited Felicity and Jee to discuss MU Maps “Learning Environment” Project on July 21st. Goodie and Sandy were also present at the meeting. MU maps are scattered throughout the Ellis Library and Marie is planning to create a common area where all the maps in various formats can be located together.

This was a preliminary planning meeting. As the project progresses we expect to conduct a lot of maintenance for the map records.

Dissertations express from UMI ProQuest

July 23rd, 2009

For approximately a year now, we have been cataloging theses and dissertations acquired through ILL for our students and faculty after their initial use. Formerly, only title and author access were provided prior to them be sent to UMLD.

The enriched records are receiving increased attention from faculty and graduate students as a couple of the most recent ones have had holds placed on them within days of being cataloged.
