Laptop Computer Checkout (Ellis Library)
Dell (Windows) and MacIntosh (Apple) laptop computers are available for 2-hour checkout at the Ellis Library Reserve Desk.
Wireless laptops are also available for use in the Engineering Library & Technology Commons, the Geology Library and the Journalism Library.
Software installation for Dell check-out laptops:
- Programs: EndNote X5, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Powerpoint), SecureCRT, SecureFX, Windows Essentials
- Internet browsers: Microsoft Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox
- Accessories: CDBurnerXP, DVD Maker, Microsoft Windows defaults (Calculator, Notepad, Paint, etc.)
- Readers / Viewers: Adobe Reader
- Players: iTunes, Media Player Classic, QuickTime, VideoLAN/VLC, Windows Media Player
- Plugins: Adobe Flash, Adobe Reader, Adobe Shockwave, AlternaTIFF, Java, LibX, Silverlight, Zotero

Laptop Computer Checkout Guidelines and Policies (Ellis Library)
- Laptop computers are available for 2-hour checkout until one hour before the library closes.
- Use the laptop within Ellis Library.
- Do not leave a laptop unattended.
- DO NOT eat, drink, or use anything MAGNETIC while using the laptop.
- Return the laptop in the same condition as when you checked it out. You are liable for damages.
- Return the laptop to an attendant at the Reserve Desk. Overdue charges are $2.00 an hour.
- Ask for help at the Reference Desk if you experience problems with the software on the laptop.
- Ask for help at the Reserve Desk if you experience problems with the battery or with the laptop itself.
- SAVE your information frequently in case the battery runs low. Monitor your battery life.
- Delete any personal material before returning the laptop.
Ellis Library Laptop FAQ
Q: What is the loan period? Can the laptop be renewed when the time is up?
A: The loan period is two hours. The laptop can be checked out again after one hour's time has elapsed from the time of the first check in.
Q: Can the laptop leave the building?
A: No.
Q: Can I print? Where do I get my printouts?
A: You may print to any of the black and white or color printers on the 1st floor of Ellis Library. Your IT printing account will automatically deduct your copies.
Q: Can I print in color?
A: Yes.
Q: Can I print 2 sided pages?
A: Yes.
Q: What happens if a person drops one and breaks it?
A: It depends. If the machine is under warranty, there will be no fine charged. There may be a fine charged if the laptop cannot be repaired "in house" and is no longer under warranty.
Q: What happens if a person does not return a laptop on time?
A: The person is charged $2.00 an hour for every hour it is overdue.
Q: What happens if a person checks out a laptop and loses it?
A: The person would be asked to pay the replacement cost of $2500.00.
