Montaigne lived during the French Renaissance period of the 16th century. He was a literary character during his life developing the idea of the modern day essay. His work is rumored to have influenced writers like Ralph Waldo Emerson and Jean-Jacques Rousseau. This version of his popular Essays was published posthumously in English.
