Item Detail

Voyages made in the years 1788 and 1789, from China to the north west coast of America...

Meares, John

London: Printed at the Logographic Press, and sold by J. Walter ..., 1790

Meares was one of the pioneers of American discovery, making the first voyage by an Englishman to the West Coast of America. This work, edited by William Combe from Meares’ papers, describes in great detail the Northwest Indians, their customs, languages, and villages. It also contains accounts of the author’s exploration in NW America, including the Strait of Juan de Fuca. His exploration was the basis for Britain’s claim of territory in this region of America, which led to serious disputes with Spain. Contains many maps and views of the NW coast of America.

Map repair to tear, remove scotch tape, stabilize earlier acidic repair.
