Break down your search into main concepts
Say you want to find information on the selection and use of news photographs – You would
break your search down into these concepts: Can be as many main concepts as you need.
Concept 1 Concept 2 Concept 3
Photo news* select*
Or And And Or
Photos use
Or Or
Photograph* gatekeep* (notice truncation)
Boolean Connectors –Using And and OR
AND is the best way to narrow down your search.
Example: photography and criticism
Use OR to search for articles which contain any of your
search terms.
Example: photo or photographs
OR is often used to broaden a search by linking together a number of synonyms.
In complex searches use parentheses to nest similar search
terms linked by OR.
Example: documentar* and (photo or photos or photograph* or photojournalis*)
Retrieves all entries which contain the words "documentary or documentaries" and "all of the photo terms," plus all entries
(Like several AND searches for the price of one!)
If you need to find out if a journal article is a trade publication or a scholarly/academic publication go to our database page for Iowa Guide to Scholarly Journals in Mass Communication or Ulrich’s International Periodical Directory .
