Notice: You must present your active student MU ID to check out library materials. Your ID becomes active when you pay your fees at Jesse Hall and they enter that information into the library system. This can take a few days or a week depending on when you paid the fees.
Eres – Electronic Reserves – Professors may put articles and chapters on Eres. Go to http://eres.missouri.edu click on either Dept. “Journalism” or Instructor – professor’s last name first initial. Some class pages may be passworded. Your professor should announce this password in class or put it in the syllabus. You must have adobe acrobat reader installed to view most articles. Eres can be accessed from anywhere.
Reserve Items - (Folders & books check out - normally 2 hours)
Please ask for reserve items by course number & Professor and author’s last name at the Circulation desk. If you are unsure about an item you may consult Merlin Library Catalog http://laurel.lso.missouri.edu/search under Reserves.
Overdue fines
Reserves - $2.00 an hour per item. Books paged from other campuses have their own fines. Overdue books from the MU system that have been billed are $175.00 for replacement. This replacement cost is removed if the book is returned. Although it takes some time to be credited to your bill at Jesse Hall.

Interlibrary Loans (ILL)
Graduate students may borrow materials from other libraries. Please check Merlin or MOBIUS library catalog to see if a copy is available for
request. Books can be obtained from another MU campus using the G (get request) function. For more info on how the “g” function works and how to view your circulation record in Merlin see attached sheet. Or you can request books through MOBIUS. For books not in Merlin or MOBIUS check the Journalism Library web page https://ill.mul.missouri.edu/ on how to request books from other libraries not available through Merlin.

Reference books, such as encyclopedias and almanacs, are located under the plasma screen in the comfy seating in the reading room.
Bound Columbia Missourian & Columbia Daily Tribune
Bound issues of the last four or five years of the Missourian and Tribune are located at the Missourian Newspaper Library in 315 Lee Hills Hall. You can search the archives of the Missourian on MerlinOne http://merlin.jour.missouri.edu/ ( you will need to contact the newspaper library staff or journalism library staff to obtain the password for this) & the archives of the Columbia Tribune at http://www.showmenews.com/
Current Periodicals (non-circulating)
Current magazines and journals are located on the shelves along the walls of the reading room. They are arranged alphabetically by title. (Older issues of periodicals are bound and shelved alphabetically in the basement stack area to the right of the copier.) Newspapers (non-circulating)
Issues of current newspapers are located on the shelves in front of the circulation desk. Domestic papers are arranged alphabetically by city and international papers are arranged by country. We have a list of the newspapers we carry in the library on the library’s web page under Quick links to Newspapers. Merlin is the online catalog of books held by four University of Missouri campus libraries plus St. Louis University. (UMSL, UMKC, SLU, UMR, and MU) The MOBIUS catalog has access to about 50 Missouri colleges & university library holdings and Washington University. Ellis library has seven branch locations. Books located at the Journalism Library have the prefix MU-Jour. There are several computers in the Journalism Library reading room and more terminals in the library stacks with Merlin and web access.

Copy Machine (10 cents per copy – ID card charging - 7 cents a copy)
A Coin/Bill operated copy machine is located in the reference computer room.
Bound Periodicals (check out – 24 hours)
Bound periodicals are shelved by call # in the compact shelving.
Books (Check out – 4 months) Books may be recalled after you have had them checked out for 2 weeks
Fines for recalled books are $2.00 a day.
Books are arranged by Library of Congress call number in the compact shelving. UMSL, UMKC, SLU, UMR, MOBIUS & Washington University libraries have different check out loan periods and fines. Please pay attention to the due date on the bookband when you check them out.
Oversized Books (books check out – 4 months, bound periodicals check out – 24 hours)
Oversized books are located downstairs on the orange shelving.
Columbia Missourian Microfilm - 1908 – present
The film for the Columbia Missourian microfilm back to the beginning is located temporarily in Ellis Current Periodicals Reading Room. If you need back issues of other major newspapers, you can look up the holdings in Merlin under a journal/newspaper search. Many newspapers on microfilm are located in Ellis library’s Special Collections department on 4th floor Ellis. Where microfilm reader/printers are located. If they do not have a newspaper on film that you need, you may interlibrary loan the film from a library that owns it. Current and back issues of Missouri newspapers are held in the State Historical Society.
Theses & Dissertations – check out for four months
MU Journalism theses and dissertations are located at the depository which can be requested through the Merlin catalog. They can be looked up in Merlin by searching the library catalog under Subject and typing - dissertations, academic -- University of Missouri – Columbia – journalism. (not case sensitive) You may then limit your search by words in the title or author or year, etc. Theses and dissertations from other universities may be searched for in Dissertation Abstracts in the Ovid database and ordered through Interlibrary loan or searched for in Merlin’s library catalog. These are also available from 1995 to present through our webpage under "Resources for" Graduate students.
Master’s Projects – check out for 1 month
Master’s projects are located upstairs after the current periodical shelves. Master’s Projects are arranged alphabetically by year then by author. Projects are listed online at our webpage under "Resources for" Graduate students. You can search for short keywords in an Excel file on disk in the project notebook. You can also look them up in Merlin under Reserves – by Course - Journalism Masters. All are listed by author.
